چکیده

10 New results show that the microstructure development of cement-silica fume blends is very different 11 from plain cement. portlandite (CH) tends to precipitate as platelets and even around clinker grains as 12 “CH rims” and is consumed by pozzolanic reaction with silica fume. The Ca/Si ratio in the inner 13 product (IP) C-S-H decreases as CH is consumed to reach Ca/Si ≈ 1.40-1.50 at the point when CH has 14 disappeared, and then drops down to 1.00 in absence of CH. At later ages, the IP C-S-H is often 15 composed of two distinct regions. The outermost (formed first) consists of originally high Ca/Si C-S-H, 16 which Ca/Si slowly decreases. The second (formed later) forms only once CH is no longer present and 17 has a lower Ca/Si. Between 10 and 38°C, the main effect of increasing the temperature is to accelerate 18 the reaction of cement and increase the reactivity of silica fume. The changes in Ca and Si in the pore 19 solution of similar systems suggest that the composition of the solution and the solids reciprocally 20 influence each other. 21

Thermodynamical and Experimental Study of the Effects of Ball Clay-Silica Fume Combination on the Hydration and Strength

The production of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) as the most expensive constituent of concrete is associated with destructive environmental effects and significant energy consumption. Thus, the use of supplementary cementitious materials such as Natural or synthetic pozzolans is a fundamental solution that affects the kinetics of hydration of cementitious materials. In this article, to evaluate...

Influence of silica fume on the microstructure of cement pastes: New insights from 1H NMR relaxometry

a r t i c l e i n f o Keywords: 1 H NMR (B) Silica fume (D) C–S–H composition (B) Density (B) 1 H NMR has been used to characterise white Portland cement paste incorporating 10 wt.% of silica fume. Samples were measured sealed throughout the hydration without sample drying. Paste compositions and C–S–H characteristics are calculated based on 1 H NMR signal intensities and relaxation analysis. Decalcification shrinkage of cement paste

Decalcification of cement paste in concrete is associated with several modes of chemical degradation including leaching, carbonation and sulfate attack. The primary aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of decalcification under saturated conditions on the dimensional stability of cement paste. Thin (0.8 mm) specimens of tricalcium silicate (C3S) paste, white portland cement (W...

Thermodynamic Modeling of the Effects of Wollastonite-Silica Fume Combination in the Cement Hydration and Sulfate Attack

Sulfate attack is a series of physico-chemical reactions between hardened cement paste and sulfate ions. Sulfate ion penetration into the hydrated cement results in the formation of voluminous and deleterious phases such as gypsum and ettringite which are believed to cause deterioration and expansion of concrete. Concrete deterioration due to sulfate attack depends on many parameters, however, ...

Study of the Microstructure Evolution of Low-pH Cements Based on Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) by Mid- and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy, and Their Influence on Corrosion of Steel Reinforcement

Low-pH cements are designed to be used in underground repositories for high level waste. When they are based on Ordinary Portland Cements (OPC), high mineral admixture contents must be used which significantly modify their microstructure properties and performance. This paper evaluates the microstructure evolution of low-pH cement pastes based on OPC plus silica fume and/or fly ashes, using Mid...
